Indigenous exporting companies currently directly and indirectly employ over 300,000 people in Ireland. If we are to create the jobs and growth we need we must build on this to improve the performance of our domestic industries, and through the Action Plan for Jobs we are providing a range of improved supports to help achieve this.
“The intensive programme of trade and investment missions which I – along with many other Ministers – have led since taking office is a major part of this. The 30 companies who accompanied us on this mission to Canada have seen significant benefits in terms of new business won and new contacts made which will lead directly to increases in exports and ultimately more jobs in Ireland. Through continued strong implementation of the Action Plan for Jobs I am determined to ensure that we can continue our strong export performance, create a powerful engine of indigenous enterprise and create the jobs we need”.

Irish animation studio JAM Media, an Enterprise Ireland client, won a BAFTA Drama Award for their long-standing CBBC series ‘Roy’ at the prestigious British Academy Children’s Awards.
Shot as a fly on the wall documentary, cartoon character Roy lives in the real world. The series lets kids gain access into Roy’s unique life and see that despite his obvious physical differences, inside, he is just the same as they are. They see too how being “different” gets Roy tormented and makers of the show say it magnifies every child’s desire to fit in and be accepted.
"The series speaks to all children in that everyone has at one time or another felt different. Roy is a humorous take on this theme,” said John Rice, JAM Media CEO and ‘Roy’ exec producer.
“The competition was stiff and this award, coming just after the re-commission of a double series of Roy by CBBC, proves that the series and the character of Roy really seems to resonate with viewers in the UK, Ireland and beyond.”
The company earlier announced that the BBC had commissioned a second series of Roy. The decision is worth €8.5 million to Jam Media and will lead to the creation of 60 new jobs.
2012 has been a good year for JAM Media as earlier this year, the company also won the Cartoon Forum Producer of the Year Award.
Dublin based Boulder Media also won a children’s BAFTA’s for writing and animation on its co-production ‘The Amazing World of Gumball’.
‘The Amazing World of Gumball’ combines 2D and 3D animation in a live-action setting, and follows the misadventures of 12-year old Gumball and his family in the town of Elmore. The series received its international debut in May and is the first full-length animated series to emerge from Cartoon Network Development Studio Europe.

Pictured at the launch of the Irish Centre for Cloud Computing and Commerce (IC4) are Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton TD with Professor Brian MacCraith, President of Dublin City University
The centre’s aim is to accelerate the development and adoption of cloud technology in Ireland, develop and showcase Ireland’s capabilities in this field and ultimately benefit the Irish economy through job creation and increased revenues in the ICT sector. The industry-led centre has a strong industry panel that includes Microsoft, Fujitsu, Intel and IBM. It will build on Ireland’s substantial research base in this area and focus on partnering researchers with industry in order to turn good research ideas into good jobs in the Irish economy.
Launching the centre, Minister Bruton said: “Cloud computing is already a significant part of the overall market for information technology and services and is now one of the fastest growing segments of the market. That's why as part of the Government’s Action Plan for Jobs we have specifically targeted this sector for jobs and growth in the coming years.
“A major part of supporting job creation in this sector is ensuring that we derive the greatest possible benefit from the major state investment in scientific research over the past decade. We must ensure not only that we continue to support cutting-edge scientific research, but also that we put in place measures to ensure that we can turn the good ideas emerging from that research into good jobs. That is why we have developed this industry-led technology research centre, to bring industry and researchers together so that they can focus on creating viable businesses and ultimately create the jobs we need”.

These awards celebrate Ireland’s own “Hidden Champions” who are well on their way to becoming European or global leaders in their sectors. It is widely acknowledged that current and former international students who have enjoyed a positive experience are the greatest ambassadors for a programme, an institution and a country. Consideration of this led Education in Ireland to establish a pilot Student Online Ambassador Programme with US university students in 2011/12.
The pilot programme was so successful that in November 2012 it was expanded to include all interested Higher Education Institutions who work with Education in Ireland, and all nationalities. 40 student ambassadors from eight countries are now on board, have received their ambassadorial training, and are now blogging about their experiences in Ireland.
The internationally innovative Student Online Ambassador Programme operates as an online community of ambassadors who provide high quality, well presented blogs, videos, podcasts and articles about their experiences as students in Ireland. The ambassadors also answer enquiries from prospective students and parents, engaging positively in discussion around the Irish higher education offering. Its aim is to establish a prestigious, gold standard international communication tool with a clear emphasis on quality. The programme has the potential to provide excellent benefits for Ireland as well as for the participating students, many of whom have found that their blogs have been published elsewhere and they have been interviewed by local papers in their home area. The students are hand-picked by their institutions and often assist on campus with promotional activities. In April the student ambassadors will receive a certificate of completion from the Minister for Education.
Education in Ireland is the umbrella brand for promoting Irish higher education institutions in overseas markets, managed by Enterprise Ireland.
Technology developed by Enterprise Ireland client company Shimmer Research is being used in a TV series called ‘The Superhuman Showdown’ on the Discovery Channel. The TV series tracks down and investigates incredible people with abilities that extend far beyond that of ordinary humans.

Established in 2008, Shimmer Research developed a bespoke analytics solution for the show to analyse data tracked from these superhumans. It’s a small wireless sensor worn on the body of each superhuman to record and transmit physiological and kinematic data in real-time to the bespoke analytics software application. This enabled a panel of experts on the show to scientifically examine the physical and mental makeup of each character and to evaluate the source of their superhuman skills.
Shimmer provided technology expert Dr. Karol O’Donovan to support the production of the show, and with his team they developed the analytics software that would be used to collect and analyse the scientific data resulting from each investigation.
Among the measurements taken using the Shimmer sensor system are angular curvature of the spine; heart rate and GSR (Galvanic Skin Response) to measure emotional state; g-Force; core and jaw muscles; gag reflex (EMG); angular velocity or revolutions per minute. The production team from Maverick TV, assembled remarkable individuals from all over the globe at a cutting edge laboratory in London, with internationally acclaimed scientists Dr Heather Berlin, Dr Rahul Jandial and Professor Greg Whyte. They categorised the superhuman feats based on unifying traits such as speed, strength, endurance, brain power, and skill and they included a Contortionist, Freediver, high G-Force tolerant pilot, Ice-cold Endurance, Uncrushable with high torso strength, head spinner, speed eater, and sword swallower.
Dr. Karol O'Donovan comments: "Involvement in a television production was a totally new environment for our engineers and presented them with challenges that we hadn't previously encountered or foreseen. This work required us to develop highly adaptable solutions which could meet the fast changing demands of TV production. While the nature of the challenge, monitoring the performance of humans, is an area we specialise in, the obscure nature of the Superhumans performances had the benefit of stimulating novel concepts in terms of solutions we can now pass onto our customers."
The Shimmer sensor worn by the superhumans in the show incorporates wireless Heart Rate, EMG, GSR, Accelerometer, Gyro, Mag , Tilt and Vibration sensors. It is an extremely extensible platform that enables researchers and industry to be at the leading edge of sensing technology.
