The two students and entrepreneurs, aged 14 and 16, have developed equine feed supplements from the herb fenugreek to prevent gastric ulcers in horses. "About 90% of racehorses have ulcers, it is a huge problem," said Annie who, along with her sister Kate, sells the products online to a range of clients including top racehorse trainers.

Their company, Fenu Health, came well ahead of the 56 other innovators competing for the votes of 14,000 readers who cast their ballots on farmersjournal.ie. They received their prize from Michael Brohan of Enterprise Ireland, Anna Marie McHugh of the National Ploughing Association, and James Maloney of the Irish Farmers Journal.

Despite their success in business, the two girls who grew up around horses are staying focused on their studies. "We're going to stay in school, and maybe possibly do agriculture in college, maybe for agriculture or business, or even equine science because that's what we find most interesting."
