Export diversification is key for continued growth of Irish Exports

By Billy Linehan
Enterprise Ireland published its international trade mission and events schedule for 2019. Against the background of a disorderly Brexit, it will feature 207 events scheduled in Ireland and overseas including 73 international trade visits. The activities aim at finding and winning new customers in more diversified export markets, including taking advantage of St Patrick’s Day when more than 70 events are due to be held.

Launching the Schedule Minister Pat Breen TD said: “the Enterprise Ireland programme of events serves to develop in-market expertise and networks, influence decision makers, re-enforce Ireland’s strong reputation and stimulate demand for Irish products and services.

Highlights of the 2019 Enterprise Ireland trade mission and event schedule include:

• 34 trade events to North America to include a multi-sector trade mission to the USA and Canada and digital technologies trade visit to the USA.
• 31 trade events to the Eurozone including 14 Trade Missions to include Trade Missions to Germany and France, the Mobile World Congress Digital Technologies event in Spain, the Money 2020 Fintech Event in Amsterdam and the Paris Air Show aviation trade event.
• 21 trade events to the Asia Pacific region to include the National Agricultural Fieldays in New Zealand, Trade Missions to Singapore, China, Japan, Korea, Australia and New Zealand.

Julie Sinnamon, CEO, Enterprise Ireland said: “Export diversification is one of the best defences against the challenges that Brexit presents. And further commented at the Eurozone Summit in Dublin’s Convention Centre “as Irish companies plan their Brexit strategies, the euro zone area provides many advantages for exporters including currency stability, no customs or tariffs and common and mutually recognised standards.
Irish exporters now need to look at the euro zone area as an extension of our own market, and we are working with over 500 companies to help them expand into the euro zone,” Ms Sinnamon said.
As part of Enterprise Ireland’s strategy, it is aiming to support the increase of exports to the euro zone by 50% by 2020.

Post Brexit, Ireland’s  appeal as a location for tech companies will be enhanced.
